Why not try one of Ribble Valley’s carfree itineraries and make use of local trails and public transport? The Clitheroe Travel Interchange is located in the centre of the town and allows you to choose different bus routes that will take you to pretty villages and more remote locations. From here, you could make your way back on foot. This will allow you the perfect opportunity to take in the stunning surroundings and make the most of the natural splendour that Ribble Valley has to offer.

One of Ribble Valley’s best-known walks is the Tolkien Trail, which follows the footsteps of the legendary author JRR Tolkien. When working on the Lord of the Rings during the Second World War, Tolkien spent much of his time at Stonyhurst College, which you will stumble upon when experiencing the Tolkein Trail walk. It has been said that there are connections with the beautiful landscapes surrounding the college and the 5.5 mile Tolkien Trail, all of which may have inspired him when creating the Lord of the Rings. The Tolkien Trail is a 9km walk, which takes you through magnificent wooded landscapes and countryside. The walk starts and finishes at the Shireburn Arms pub, where you can expect a very warm welcome on collecting your walking guide and a delicious meal awaiting you when you arrive back from this unforgettable walk. With so many different adventurous walks to experience, you will want to look and feel the part.
