CLITHEROE – (about 20 minutes’ drive from Meadow Cottage)

Longridge  |  ChippingWhalley  |  Pendle Hill and the Lancashire Witches  |  The Ribble Valley

A vibrant market town with a bustling high street, a traditional market and side streets full of character revealing independent shops, galleries and eateries.

Crowning the town from an elevated position is Clitheroe castle, with its ancient Norman keep and modern family-friendly museum, set in 16 acres of surrounding grounds providing a panoramic view of the valley. Whether you enjoy browsing the shops, arts and culture, delving into history or love fantastic food then Clitheroe is most definitely a place for your ‘must visit’ list.

Clitheroe excels in providing a high-quality, super-stylish and truly independent shopping experience. If it is fashion, shoes and accessories you are looking for, the town hosts a range of boutiques selling designer brands for men, women and children. There is also an extensive selection of country wear labels available. Independent shops showcase some exquisite items for the home such as locally made candles and hand-woven throws.

If outdoors and picnics are your thing you are never far from open countryside in Clitheroe. Edisford Bridge boats one of the prettiest riverside spots in the area with picnic tables, a miniature steam railway, children’s swings and slides, an ice cream van and plenty of fresh clear river water in which to paddle.

CLITHEROE CASTLE  – Overlooking the quaint town of Clitheroe is the ancient landmark, Clitheroe Castle. Sitting proudly on top of its limestone mound the Castle’s keep is open daily and free to visit.

Stunning panoramic views of the Ribble Valley’s beautiful, historic landscape can be seen from here which certainly makes the climb to the top worthwhile. Within the bailey walls visitors will also find Clitheroe Castle Museum and Gift Shop, the Atrium Café and the Steward’s Gallery, making it a must-see destination for all the family.

BOWLAND FOOD HALL  –  Bowland Food Hall is the most wonderful showcase for the very best of Lancashire’s food and drink producers. This modern temple to gastronomic indulgence provides a platform for local producers to sell their wares in an elegant setting.

Based in the heart of the market town of Clitheroe – noted for its thriving community of independent retailers – Bowland Food Hall is located at the gateway to the pretty rolling countryside of the Ribble Valley and the wilder, more dramatic uplands of the Forest of Bowland – a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is where much of our vast selection of meat, cheese and dairy products originate – keeping our food miles down to single figures in many cases!

DAWSONS DEPARTMENT STORE –  is a family owned business which originally started in the centre of the market town of Clitheroe in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire. Originally opened as an ironmongers and fireplace merchant serving the rural farmers, we have expanded into the leading independent houseware store in the area. Our departments now include Cookshop, Bedlinen, Hardware

& Paint, Giftware, Barbecues, Garden Furniture, Handbags, and Luggage. In 2004 we started trading online, and we now have the leading websites selling cookware, tableware, barbecues, garden furniture, and bedlinen.
